Harlem Shake: June 2012
It’s June now and I haven’t done this for a bit. I got lots of new stuff on here from post internet trap music (Baauer) to the latest gems from some of the best bands going around (Walkmen, Liars, AC, Black Dice) to some crazy ass rap music (Le1f, Killer Mike, El P, PURRP) to Albertan outsider music (Haack). Let’s do this.
1. Animal Collective - Honeycomb
2. The Walkmen -...

Academics
Despite not being that overly serious about my academic career at this point, somehow I’ve parlayed a sparsely attended conference paper last December into a slot on an all star invited symposium at the same organization’s annual conference. There’s a dude who invented his own department and has published 20 books, a couple of shit hot affect studies / education researchers with...

Back from the Grave: April 2012
After a week in mighty Ulaan Baatar, I’ve been holed up in humid, rainy Hong Kong, where I’ve enjoyed/abused the hotel’s bandwith to catch up on the latest in music. No theme here but most tracks seem sweaty, noctural and languid to my ears (in the best sense of those words). Enjoy and discuss.

The Worst Flight Ever
I spent the last week in Hong Kong very ill with a motherfucker of a cold. That wasn’t that great and the colds in China seem to be post-apocalyptic in strength. But then just as I was etting better I came down with food poisioning on the plane back to Beijing. The likely culprit was a sandwich from Pret a Manger before the flight. I’ve been in bed now for 2 days.
But, in better...

Adventures Behind The Great Firewall, Part 2
Wikipedia’s entry on “Lars-Erik Sjoberg” appears to be blocked by the Great Firewall of China. Peculiar. Why does the CPC not want its citizens to know about a Swedish defenceman from the 1970s???

Lessons for Mongolia's Copper and Coal and Gold...
”We were the end products of the system, the logical outcome, slabs of burnt-out capital. We were also men with families and homes, whatever our present situation. We had beliefs, commitments. It went beyond systems, I thought. They were asserting that nothing mattered, that distinctions were dead. Let the markets crash and die. Let the banks, the brokerage firms, the groups, the funds, the...

This might potentially be useful for people, and it’s a handy sketch of Bolaño’s ouevre, but the author’s description of 2666 paints him as a complete philistine, as far as I’m concerned: “The book is a desert of negative space across which the panting reader will search in vain for the traditional pleasures of the novel: form, character, coherence, meaning.” Seriously, is he...

Music Wrap Up 2011
2011 has been an interesting year in a lot of ways. Musically, I’ve found myself retreating generically to comfort zones (such as most of the Odd Future stuff), not expanding outwards, and showing much more cynicism to “new” movements (chillwave, for instance). It’s also been the first year where I’ve had non-precarious (basically), day in and day out, 8:30 to...
